NEW DELHI: Chinese manufacturer, Coolpad recently forayed into the Indian market with the launch of its budget smartphone, Dazen 1. Launched at Rs 6,999, the smartphone got a price cut and is now available at a better deal at Rs 5,999. It competes with the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 2 and Yuphoria and Yureka phones from Yu.
On paper, the hardware specifications of the phone seem to be good for the price at which it is being sold. However, we used it as our primary phone to find out how it fares in day-to-day use and whether it is a good buy.
Design
While the Coolpad Dazen 1 is decent to look at, we found the design of the phone to be very ordinary. There's no real novelty and it looks like any other budget Android smartphone available in the market.
Dazen 1 has a 5-inch screen with thick bezels, and is light to hold at 155g. The smartphone's power button is on the right edge whereas the volume rocker button is on the left edge. The 3.5mm headphone jack is located at the top of the phone and the microUSB port is at the bottom.
The removable back panel sports a matte finish, which looks good and makes the phone easy to grip. The back also features a camera lens at the top along with LED flash, and there's some Dazen branding below it. The speaker outlet is at the bottom with Coolpad branding above it. On removing the back panel, you'll be able to see the stacked dual-sim card slot, the microSD card slot, and the removable battery of the phone.
The smartphone's front panel has three capacitive touchscreen buttons that are backlit. Overall, Dazen 1 looks like any other budget smartphone with a 5-inch display and doesn't really have a differentiating trait.
Display
The Dazen 1 features a 5.0-inch (1280x720p) capacitive touchscreen display, which we found to be impressive.
The display was bright and colours looked rich and vibrant on it. The viewing angles were also pretty good and colours did not distort even when we did not look at the phone head-on. There were no problems in using the phone under direct sunlight.
Although, we did not observe any pixilation, the display was very prone to smudging, and was more or less a fingerprint magnet. Apart from this, we don't have any complaints with the display of the smartphone.
Software
The Dazen 1 smartphone comes with Android 4.4 KitKat skinned with the company's own Cool UI.
The phone's UI has no app drawer, and all the app icons are displayed on the phone's homescreen. The phone comes preloaded with a number of apps including WeChat, WPS Office, Facebook, SwiftKey, among others. Some of these preloaded apps were specifically designed for Coolpad including Lock Screen, CoolShow, Rock Wallpaper, and Cool store.
The Rock Wallpaper app is one of the most interesting apps in the phone, on touching it, it automatically changes the wallpaper of your smartphone. And till the time we used the phone, not a single wallpaper was repeated.
Apart from this, a widget called CoolShow lets users switch themes, wallpapers, lockscreen wallpapers, alarm tones, notification tones, etc. Long pressing the home screen gives users the option of changing settings of widgets, wallpapers, effects, and preferences. The user can use these to hide or sort out apps, activate screen switchover, arrange icons, etc.
Users can also access two different apps at the same time by using split screen option.
To sum it up, we like the software experience the smartphone offered and did not face any issues with it.
Performance
Powered by a 1.2 GHz Quad-Core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) processor with Adreno 306 GPU, the Dazen 1 is a decent performer. The smartphone also has 8GB of internal storage out which around 3GB is available to the users. But people who want to store more can install microSD cards of up to 32GB.
The phone performs basic tasks without any hiccups; the apps don't take long to start, and there was no lag while running multiple apps or multiple browser tabs in the background. Video playback was smooth and the sound output from the speakers was clear and loud.
In AnTuTu Benchmark test the Dazen 1 scored 19,218, whereas in Geekbench 3 it scored 480. It clocked 52.2 in NenaMark 2. The scores are lower compared to the Redmi 2 but we don't endorse benchmark tests and do not recommend a phone based solely on benchmarks as real world performance is different at times.
The GPS of the phone worked smoothly, although we noticed that the phone did heat up a bit during navigation. We were not able to test 4G on the phone as there was no LTE coverage at the time of writing this review.
However, we were disappointed with the call quality offered by the smartphone. At times we encountered problems while trying to listen to the other party. Another issue we encountered was that the call volume was too loud even at the lowest volume level. People could easily eavesdrop into our conversations!
Dazen 1 comes with 2,500mAh battery, which lasted more than a day before the need to charge again with moderate to high usage.
Camera
Coolpad Dazen 1 sports an 8MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash along with a 5MP secondary camera. We were impressed by the front facing camera, and the primary camera was also decent.
However, the colours in the images shot with the phone were not accurate at all and appeared a little dull than how they actually were. In fact, we clicked an object that was red but it seemed more like orange.
Leaving that aside, we did not encounter any other issue. We felt the photos shot with the phone were clear and there was no pixilation when we zoomed in.
The camera also features various shooting modes and features like beauty mode, HDR, night-shot, picture focus, PIP, Sound and shot, smile and face recognition, no backdrop and GIF.
The camera also worked perfectly in dimly lit areas. The 5MP secondary camera of the phone takes good quality selfies.
Verdict
The Coolpad Dazen 1 adds more choice to the ever-expanding budget smartphone segment in India. The phone has an edge over the Xiaomi Redmi 2 as it comes with more RAM and 5MP front camera.
At just Rs 7,000 you get a 4G-capable budget smartphone that offers decent performance, an above average camera and good battery life.
